1. Administrative Law:
Administrative Law is a law course in Nigerian universities mostly studied by 2nd/3rdyear law students. This course centres on body of law that governs and administer the affairs of the state and other government agencies. It is also concerned with rule making, adjudication, and the enforcement of a government regulatory agenda.
2. Nigerian Legal Method:
This course is mainly done by 1st/2ndyear students. It is a course that explains the legal profession as it is in Nigeria, to law students in Nigeria. Here students are taught how the Nigeria law works, the kind of law Nigeria operate, and many other things. Legal method is one of the law courses every Nigerian Law student must offer.
3. Nigerian Legal System:
Just like Nigerian legal method, Nigerian legal system is a course also studied my new law students in Nigerian universities. This course exposes students to the Nigerian Court system. Here, students will learn about the sources of Nigeria law and how they laws operate in Nigeria.
4. Banking and Insurance Law:
Banking and Insurance Law is another great course in Nigerian universities. It has to do basically with laws regulating the banking and financing system in Nigeria. This course is mostly done by 4year law students. Though, i have heard many law students who confirmed that it is done by 2year law students in their own school.
5. Constitutional Law:
Constitutional law is a law course in Nigerian university that exposes students to the law which limits the powers of both the federal government and stated government in Nigeria. It also focuses on how the fundamental human right of Nigerians are guided.
6. Criminal Law:
This course is related to cases of criminal offences in Nigeria. It is also concerned with the punishment of law offenders in Nigeria. Criminal law is a well recognised course in Nigerian universities.
7. Criminology:
According to Wikipedia, criminology is the scientific study of the nature, extent, management, causes, control, consequences, and prevention of criminal behavior, both on individual and social levels. In Nigerian universities, criminology is studied by 2year law students. It is one of my best courses ever.
8. Commercial Law:
Commercial Law is largely concerned with trade activities in Nigeria. Here, students will learn about the law that regulate the activities of traders, merchants and even business organisations in Nigeria.
9. Law of Contract:
The aim of this course is to teach university students about the law that guides the making of agreements, promises and contracts in Nigeria. The law of contract is a compulsory course in most Nigerian universities.
10. Law of Tort:
Law of tort is another interesting law course in Nigerian university. It is mostly offered by 3rd/4th year law students. This course is a course under civil law. It is concerned basically with the liability of a person for the harm he/she causes to another person in the society.
11. Law of Consumer Protection:
Law of consumer protection teaches students of the law which regulate the way goods are manufactured/produced and transported in Nigeria. It is tends to protect and safeguard the food consumed in the Nigeria.
12. Law of Evidence and Procedure:
Law of Evidence and procedure is connected with legal proceedings in the law court. This course exposes students to how a Nigerian lawyer should behave in the court. More so, it teaches students about how evidences should be brought and made admissible in the court.
13. Industrial law:
Industrial Law is another significant law courses offered in Nigerian universities. This course relates to the laws governing industrial enterprises. These can include a wide range of legal topics, from laws to employment environmental concerns,contracts, industrial relation and worker safety regulations.
14. Equity and Trusts:
Equity and trust tends to introduce law students to the ideology of equality of everyman before the law. It also helps law students to be just and unambiguous in their dealings as impending lawyers.
15. Land Law
Land law is another great law course in Nigeria. It is always done by 4th year law students in Nigerian universities. Land law has to do with the ownership of real properties. It is one of my most loved law courses for now.
16. Law of Succession and Administration of Estate:
Law of succession and administration of estate is a very vital law course in Nigerian universities. This course is connected to will making and the Succession of the estate of a decreased person.
17. Law of Energy and Natural Resources:
Law of Energy and Natural Resource is not yet offered in some law universities in Nigeria. The course exposes law students to the branch of Nigeria law that regulate the use of the countries natural resources like forest, water etc.
18. Law of Arbitration:
This is a selective course in most Nigerian universities. Here, law students are taught of the law which guides the legal technique for the resolution of disputes outside the courts.
19. Family Law:
Family Law is a branch of civil law that regulates the smallest unit of the society. Family law exposes young lawyers to the law that regulate the family in Nigeria. For example, the law regulating the ownership of children.
20. Company and Partnership Law:
This course is almost the same as commercial Law. It has to do with the law which governs partnership businesses and companies in Nigeria. Company and Partnership Law is optional in some Nigerian universities.
21. Jurisprudence and Legal Theory:
Jurisprudence and Legal Theory is a well recognised law course in Nigerian university. It concerned with deep understanding of legal reasoning, legal systems, and legal institutions in Nigeria.
22. Law of Taxation:
The law of taxation covers the law that governs the payment of taxes by Nigerian citizens. This course is mostly for 3rd year law students.
23. Public International Law:
Public International Law exposes students to the law that don’t just concern Nigeria alone, but all nations of the world. It can also be called international law.
24. Conveyancing Law:
Indeed, this is another interesting law course in Nigerian universities. It is basically concerned with the transfer of legal title of real property from one person to another.
25. Law of Industrial and Intellectual Property:
This course is basically to teach law students all they need to know about the ownership of industrial and intellectual properties such as copyright law, patent, trademark, designations of origin etc.
26. Planning and Environmental Law:
Planning and Environmental Law is aimed at exposing young lawyers to laws in Nigeria which are supposed to regulate human conducts that will cause harm to the environment and the society at large.
