How To Calculate GPA And CGPA.

Let’s take for instance you are a fresher and just started your 100L in mechanical engineering at a Nigerian University. At the end of the first semester your grades were as follows:

Sample 1st semester 100 level GPA

CourseCUTTGradeGPQP
MTH101368B4.0012
ENG111157C3.003
PHY101377A5.0015
GSS101271A5.0010
CHM101480A5.0020

Summarily, the student did well in the first semester of study.
→ The Total Course Unit  for 100 level first Semester is 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 19

→ Total Quality Point for 100 level first Semester( Gotten by multiplying GP by CU): 12 + 3 + 10 + 15 + 20 + 12 + 15 = 87 ₹
→ The GPA of the 100L year 1 is gotten by dividing the total Quality Point by the total course unit. Now, it should be 87/19 which gives: 4.58  —  to 2 significant figures. That is your first semester GPA.

We are done with calculations related to the first semester. Remember, you can’t get a CGPA without going through two or more semesters. Let’s move on to the second semester of the same level.

Sample 2nd semester 100 level GPA

→ Now, the total course unit  for 100 level second semester is 3 +1 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 18
→ The total quality point for 100 level second semester is 15 + 2 + 15 + 10 + 16 + 9 + 10 = 77.
→ The second semester GPA = 77/18 = 4.38.

Now your total year one CGPA = total 1st semester and 2nd semester 100L quality point divided by the total credit units.

Let’s check,

Total credit unit first semester = 19; that of second semester = 18; TT= 37.

Total quality point of first semester = 87; that of second semester = 77; TT= 164.

Now your 100L CGPA = 164/37 = 4.43

What if you’ve entered into year two, how is it done? Let’s do one more!

Sample 1st semester 200 level GPA

ENG212383A5.0015
ENG112137F0.000
MEC232372A5.0015

ENG241378A5.0015

CIV212382A5.0015
Total1885

→ The total course unit for 200 level first Semester is 3 +1 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18
→ The total quality point for 200 level first semester is 15 + 0 + 15 + 10 + 15 + 15 + 15 = 85.
→ The 200L first semester GPA = 85/18 = 4.72

Now your CGPA on completion of 100L and 200L first semester = total 100L & 200L 1st semester quality point divided by the total credit units.

Total credit unit first semester = 19; that of second semester = 18; that of 200L 1st semester = 18; TT= 55.

Total quality point of first semester = 87; that of second semester = 77; that of 200L second semester = 85; TT= 249.

Now your CGPA = 249/55 = 4.53
